Derek L. Wise

Commander Derek Wise is an established law enforcement professional as well as a national and state certified instructor /trainer. Commander Wise began his law enforcement career in 1991 with the Venice Police Department where he started out as a patrol officer. During his time with Venice PD, he successfully performed the duties of Detective, Corporal, Sergeant and Patrol Commander. In 1997, Commander Wise began working for the Madison County Sheriffs Department where he started out in patrol as a deputy. In 2000, Commander Wise transitioned to the Illinois State Police. During his career with the Illinois State Police, Commander Wise has held numerous positions which include, Trooper, Sergeant, Master Sergeant, Task Force Deputy Director and currently, Narcotics Commander.

Commander Wise is a well-known and well-respected instructor/trainer. While serving in the military, Commander Wise served as an instructor with the United States Army Primary Leadership Development School (PLDC) specializing in unit leadership. Commander Wise was personally recruited by the Southwestern Illinois Police Academy (SWIC) to instruct new police recruits in criminal law. Commander Wise is currently a state certified instructor (Illinois State Training and Standards Board) for the Illinois State Police specializing in Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) and criminal law.

Commander Wise is a nationally certified instructor in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. (SFST) In addition to teaching for 2 police academies, Commander Wise is an instructor for the Southwestern Illinois Law Enforcement Commission specializing in Basic Surveillance Techniques. Commander Wise serves as a subject matter expert and is a certified promotional assessor.

Commander Wise has completed numerous hours of professional development programs including the Northwestern Illinois University School of Polie Staff and Command. He received his Associates degree in Administration of Justice from Belleville Area College. Commander Wise successfully completed his Bachelor’s degree for Business Administration, with a Paralegal certification, at Webster University. Commander Wise earned his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Lindenwood University. He currently serves as an adjunct instructor at Lindenwood University and ITT Technical Institute where he teach communication and criminal justice courses. His training, experience and education has provided the opportunity to train in a wide variety of topics. He has successfully presented courses to a wide range of students to include law enforcement officers, business professionals, college faculty and college students.
